European Parliament Interest Group meeting on Antimicrobial Resistance

Apr 09, 2014

'MEPs for CAM (complementary and alternative medicine),' the European Parliament Interest Group for Complementary and Alternative Medicine, held a meeting on 1 April on the role of CAM in reducing the need for antibiotics. It was hosted by MEPs Sirpa Pietikaeinen (Finland) and MEP Alojz Peterle (Slovenia).

Both the World Health Organisation and the European Commission have identified antimicrobial resistance as a major crisis facing the health systems of many countries. Ms Herta Adam, Deputy Head of Unit 'Health Threat' of DG Sanco, the Health Directorate of the European Commission presented details of a five-year-action plan set up by the Commission to reduce the use of antibiotics. Speakers from the CAM community and academia gave short presentations on the potential role of CAM in combatting antimicrobial resistance. High level evidence shows that CAM can offer effective treatment options for a range of human infectious diseases, as well as act as an effective alternative to antibiotic use in animal husbandry. The high quality of data presented at the meeting are an encouraging indication of the continuing professionalisation of the sector.
