MEPs for CAM to address availability of homeopathic and anthroposophic medicines

The next meeting of the European Parliament Interest Group,  MEPs for CAM (Complementary and Alternative Medicine), will address the topic of availability of CAM medicinal products for the benefit of EU citizens, including homeopathic and anthroposophic medicinal products.

The meeting, which is the first meeting of this group in this Parliament,  will be hosted by Sirpa Pietikäinen MEP on Wednesday 1 July in the European Parliament in Brussels.

Experts from the CAM community will outline issues that limit availability of CAM medicinal products, underlining the potential of these products to address some major health issues of our time such as antimicrobial resistance and chronic disease.

Speakers will refer to the recent report by Matrix Insight, commissioned by DG Health and Food Safety, which demonstrates how the availability of herbal, homeopathic, and anthroposophic medicinal products is unnecessarily restricted in some Member States. The lack of availability of these products inhibits an increasing demand by EU citizens for low risk, health enhancing CAM medicines, hampering the ability of doctors and practitioners to deliver CAM treatments effectively. Urgent measures are now needed to increase the availability of these products across the EU, and speakers will present proposals for positive action within the current legal framework.

The meeting will offer the opportunity for policy makers, researchers and stakeholders to enter into an active dialogue on this important subject. Availability of homeopathic and anthroposophic medicines is  major topic for ECHAMP and its members, who will be represented at the meeting by Nand De Herdt.
